Lit and Comp Independent Reading Requirement
The intent of this requirement is to provide opportunities to read what YOU WANT to read and to ENJOY the process. It promotes life long reading as well as increased reading now. The more you read, the better readers and writers you will become.
NOTE: The assessment of this reading requirement may VARY from quarter to quarter.
-
Students will select one book of their choice to read EACH quarter and will have to submit the name and author near the beginning of the quarter.
-
There may be small written prompts periodically on their reading.
-
BOOK TALKS: For the quarters that have book talks as the primary assessment students will be assigned dates to do short 2-3 minute book talks on their selection that encorporates some form of technology (Glogster, videos, Power Points, Prezis, etc.) These are meant to be creative opportunities to showcase your selection, answer questions from the audience, and tell your peers if it is a book you'd recommend and why.
IN CLASS WRITTEN ASSESSMENTS: For the quarters that have written assessments, students will be given writing prompts to respond to in class that will require them to evaluate, report, and reflect on their book. These will be IN CLASS assessments. Students will NOT know in advance the writing prompts and prompts will vary from class to class and from student to student.
SMALLER MID POINT ASSESSMENTS: There are times when students may also be awarded points for having their book in class for reading, to share a passage with the class, etc. There are also times when they may be asked to do short entries on the book they are reading.
I do not want to put a lot of requirments on the length of the book, the genre, etc. However, make sure it is appropriate for school and is at least 150 pages long and a high school reading level. The presentations and writingn assessments will be worth 50 points and I may offer extra credit to students who present the first day since presentations will be spread out over the course 2-3 weeks.
I will provide examples of high interest books you may want to read, bring you to the library to allow you to select a book, and provide a book preview opportunity in class. Once you see and hear what other people are reading, you can get ideas from each other as well.
Do NOT select something you've already read OR that was required reading for one of our classes. Spread your wings and try something NEW. You may select fiction or non-fiction but your book will be approved by the teacher.
