Lit and Comp has more outside work and more challenging material.
OVERALL TRENDS:
More Writing:
Lit has everything from additional full length papers, mini-essays (one paragraph), in-class timed essays, and small research/reaction type assignments on a topic related to the story we’re reading.
Tougher Grading:
There are more deductions for grammar mistakes even when the assignment is the same (ex – 1 pt for every grammar mistake vs. ½ pt for every grammar mistake).
Variations on the same assignment:
Also additional requirements even when the general assignment is the same (additional req noted on project sheets – additional req for intros, personal references, length of a paper, # of slides on a PPt, etc.)
More Reading:
Supplemental stories related to the unit
Extra 25 page Hemingway story
Even the Hemingway story they BOTH read – Eng 10 gets to listen to on cd. In the Caged Bird Unit Lit classes read the entire book but Eng 10 classes just read sections of it.
More Poetry:
More poetry and related assignments are incorporated into the Caged Bird unit. For example, only the Lit students read "On the Pulse of Morning" which is a very challenging read.
More Grammar/Tougher Concepts:
See challenge zone on my web site for additional concepts that are covered in the the Lit class. Lit classes also have more challenging grammar quizzes.
Additional Projects: I-Search Research Assignments:
Lit students also complete I-search Research (multiple intelligence projects) in the Animal Farm and Julius Caesar Units.
More Independence:
For example, the pre-writing is optional not required for the Lit classes. They also have fewer graded check points (mini-deadlines).
An Additional Presentation:
Both classes do presenations but the Lit students do an additional major presentation during the research unit.
Required Independent Reading and Related Assessments:
Lit students need to read one book independently each quarter and do a book talk that requires technology the quarters 1,2, and 3 or a timed short in class essay on their reading selection 4th quarter.
More Out of Class Work:
Although they do get work time, they often get a little less work time when typing up a paper, doing research, completing required reading, etc. In fact, the English 10 students get time to work on their research paper in class as part of the Caged Bird / Overcoming Obstacles unit. However, the Lit students do that almost entirely outside of class during the Resilence / Inspirpational People unit. Similarly, students do their I-search research projects almost entirely outside of class.
