Academic Decathlon

If you are interested in Academic Decathlon, please contact an Advisor.

Advisors: Christy Glover | Email & Kellina Mattson | Email

The United States Academic Decathlon is a team competition wherein students match their intellects with students from other schools. Students are tested in ten categories:

Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science, and Speech.

Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores. Winning teams advance through the local, regional, and state levels of competition. The state champions compete at the national finals.

Educational Experience
Based on the model of the athletic decathlon, the Academic Decathlon requires participants to prepare for ten academic events. Like the athletic contest, the Academic Decathlon does not permit participants to specialize but rather the Academic Decathlon encourages academic versatility by requiring students to prepare for all ten events. The Academic Decathlon stresses educational opportunity and academic excellence.

History
The Academic Decathlon was first created by Dr. Robert Peterson, former Superintendent of Schools in Orange County, California. Firmly believing that everyone's learning potential can be maximized through competitive challenge, Dr. Peterson set in motion the contest that has since come to be recognized as the most prestigious high school academic team competition in the United States. The program spread rapidly throughout the states due to the success and excitement it engendered. USAD was founded in 1981.

Program Description
The Academic Decathlon is a ten-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. Each high school enters a team of nine students: 3 "A" or Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C" or Varsity students.

Science Club

Advisor: Sarah Klingbile | Email

The students of the Seymour High School Science Club are committed to serving the residents of the local community.  Our club has been actively studying the local groundwater system since 2003 and at the same time, providing the local residents an opportunity to have their private drinking water tested through a local professional water testing facility.  Since our school district is located at the northern end of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Arsenic Advisory area, we have focused our research so far, around the relationships that may exist between naturally occurring arsenic and other heavy metals that may be present in the drinking water.  Our students have also developed a working relationship with the students of Oneida Nation High School, as their students have plotted our data and mapped the information using G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) software to create three-dimensional views of the data collected.

Currently, we are analyzing the data collected through our most recent research grant, a 2007 Toyota TAPESTRY large grant that allowed the students to study the chemical relationships that may exist between naturally occurring arsenic and 23 other heavy metals that may be present in the groundwater.  The water samples were professionally tested at Clean Water Testing of Appleton, WI and results were shared with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Hydrology and Groundwater department in Madison, WI.

If you would like more information on our water testing projects, or would like information on how you can have your private drinking water tested, please contact Advisor.
