Policies:
Phones:
Cell phones should NOT be out in class. Having your phone out could result in it being taken away and brought to the office. Having a phone or ipod out during a test or quiz results in loss of points on the test or quiz and temporary loss of your phone. I do not give warnings; I just take them.
Using your phone DURING class time (even if that means while you're in the hallway) will also result in it being taken away. You MAY use your phones before or after school or during lunch but NOT while class is in session. IF the need arises to use a phone, let me know in advance and we can work it out.
Hats:
Hats ARE allowed in my class.
Music (Ipods, etc):
You MAY use Ipods and cd players during independent work time as long as the volume is low but NOT during instruction, tests, or presentations.
Food:
Snacks and drinks ARE allowed as long as it is not distracting or messy. (Fast food or full meals are considered distracting.) However, food and drink can NOT be out when we are using computers.
Detentions:
I rarely find the need to give detentions. However, in the rare event that a student needs to make up time, he or she needs to do it AFTER school Monday through Thursday in my room. (Sometimes I may be available on Fridays; check with me.) Students who do not make up detentions in a week may get a day of in school suspension.
Late Penalties:
There is a 25% penalty for any work that is a full day or more late and no credit is offered for work in the last three days of the quarter. Also once a unit is done it is also too late to turn in work from that unit. Turning work in later in the class period or later in the day IS considered late. Work that is just minutes or hours late is 10% off. Most work is submitted via Google Classroom; students must hit TURN IN when they are done. Submission errors will result in a 5% deduction if students can prove through revision history data that the work was done on time.
PRESENTATIONS are only given late IF the student has an excused absence. Students unprepared to present or who have an unexcused absence will NOT be allowed to present for reduced points on another day.
IF you have a computer problem, your parents must CALL me to confirm it IF you want a brief extension. Such problems should be very rare.
Make Up Work:
Students who have EXCUSED absences are allowed one day for each day they are absent PLUS one additional day. Therefore, if you were absent three days, he or she may have four days to turn in your work. Students with skips or unexcused absences may not be allowed to make up the work.
If you are absent, make up QUIZZES and TESTS ASAP. Generally they should be made up the day a student returns from being absent. REMIND ME and if I get busy doing something else, remind me AGAIN. We often go over the correct answers in class so it's important to make up quizzes right away. If students forget to make up a quiz or test, they may lose points or not be allowed to make it up at all if too much time passes. THIS IS ONE OF THE RULES THAT IS HARDEST FOR MANY STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND and then they are surprised when they lose points on quizzes they don't make up in a timely fashion.
IF you were absent on a day when group work was assigned, SEE me to determine IF you can join up w/ the group, if you'll have to do the assignment by yourself, or if you'll get an adjusted assignment.
Always check the website when you are absent to see what you missed and then follow up with me.
When students are absent they should check the website and the chalk board to see what they missed. They should also check w/ friends and me.
Labeling Work:
To ensure you get all of the points, please make sure your full name AND hour is written on the top of all of your work. Points are deducted for failing to do this.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism, which is using a portion of someone else's work without giving them credit, is a form of cheating. Any form of cheating (whether cheating on a quiz, test, paper, etc.) will result in a zero which can NOT be made up. Also in cases of plagiarism student services and the principal will be informed which is consistent with our plagiarism policy.
Quia Quizzes and Pearson Accounts:
It is important that you remember your passwords for your Quia and Pearson Success Net accounts. If you need to reset them, you will likely have to do that during ELT time so have your password something you will remember AND write it down just in case you forget. I HIGHLY recommend you use the SAME user name and password you use to log into the computer.
There are NO electronic devices, notes, handouts, talking, wandering eyes, etc. allowed during quizzes. Students also can NOT go to other web pages while taking their tests or quizzes.
E-Mail Me:
I check my e-mail A LOT even on weekends and breaks. Therefore, feel free to e-mail me with questions or concerns.
