- First Sergeant James A. Porter, U.S. Army (ret.) was born on St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands. He studied classical composition and orchestral conducting at the Juilliard School of Music. He also studied Pre-Kindergarten to Elementary Education at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he graduated Suma cum Laude. Porter served 24 years in the United States Army, where he conducted, composed and performed with army bands in the United States, Europe, The Middle East, and South East Asia. During his years in the army, he also worked as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Training, tasked with teaching classes in race relations, domestic abuse, sexual harassment, leadership, the military code of conduct, the Geneva convention, basic combat skills (including small arms), and many other military subjects. Porter, a highly decorated soldier whose military awards include four Meritorious Service Medals and ten Good Conduct Medals, is a combat veteran of Vietnam and the first Gulf War. Currently, Porter, teaches literacy skills, reading, and language arts at Seymour Middle School, but he has taught all five content areas (reading, math, science, social studies, and language arts) since coming to the district in 1997. Porter lives with his wife and daughter on their farm in Pulaski, Wisconsin.
